In the summer of 1776, more than a year after American colonists had begun their rebellion against Great Britain, the Second Continental Congress discussed a resolution for independence. A committee of five worked on the document, but it was Thomas Jefferson who arranged the initial draft and whose expressive phrasing made it a masterpiece of political writing. The text of the declaration contains three major sections: a statement of principle, a list of grievances against King George III, and the formal announcement of independence. Listed at the bottom of the document are the names of the men who signed the Declaration.
A special section of the document reads, “ . . . these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States; that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved . . .” That was a bold statement, but these colonists wanted to be free.
How about you? Do you want to be free? Then declare your Declaration of Dependence on the Lord! Jesus set you free on the cross, but you must take that free gift. And when you declare your allegiance to Him then your relationship to the tyranny of sin will be “totally dissolved”. (John 8:36) "Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.
Are you living like a liberated person? Or are you still chained to the past, imprisoned to the present circumstances of your life, with no hope for tomorrow? Jesus broke the chains so rise up and walk away from that old life in the freedom of the Spirit. What’s holding you down? Don’t you know that tie to the old life has been severed? When Jesus died, our old life died with Him. Now we are risen with Christ into a new life. (Rom 6:4-8; Eph 4:22-23)
But you say you can’t get it together and make it happen? Wrong approach there. That’s reliance on yourself. You’ve got to make a Declaration of Dependence on the Lord and then you will see the power of God in your life making the changes that only He can affect. (Zech 4:6)
