(Psa 24:1) The earth is the Lord's, and all its fullness, The world and those who dwell therein.
There has been an age-old question about the difference between the secular and the sacred. Are there certain things that are secular and certain things that are sacred and never the two shall meet? People talk about “sacred” music over “secular” music. Some talk about going to a “secular” bookstore over a “Christian” bookstore. In vocation they talk about a “secular” business pursuit over a “ministry.” Sometimes these distinctions can trouble a person and make them feel they are doing something wrong or make a person mad because they feel judged by others who say they are doing something that is unspiritual.
The Bible says Christians should be separate from the world and not be unequally yoked (2 Cor 6:14-18). But the Bible also says that we are to be influencing the world for Christ (Mat 5:13-14; 1 Cor 5:9-11). So how do you reconcile the two? It has been said that we are to be “in the world and not of the world.” Also I like the one that says, “It’s okay for the boat to be in the water but be careful that the water doesn’t get in the boat” Sayings like these bring a balance that we as Christians should always be seeking so we won’t get off or lopsided in our reasoning. I like what Jesus said, "I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one.” (John 17:15)
The whole earth is the Lord’s. So why do we separate things between the secular and the sacred? I can get up in the morning and read my Bible and then go out and enjoy the surf because it’s a sunny day and the surf is up. But am I going from the secular to the sacred? Because as I’m walking out into the water I am praying for safety and of course . . . good waves! And when I’m out in the water I am singing songs to Jesus between sets. And when I catch a wave it’s PRAISE GOD all the way!
If I live all my life for the glory of God, then am I superimposing the secular onto the sacred (or the opposite)? I believe that is the balanced teaching from the Bible: (Col 3:17) And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.
This is my Father’s world and I love living it for Him no matter what I am doing for His glory . . . at home or at work or at play. Secular or sacred? In God’s world it’s seamless!
