You are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read by all men; 3 clearly you are an epistle of Christ, ministered by us, written not with ink but by the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of flesh, that is, of the heart. (2 Cor 3:2-3)
Reality shows are the big thing these days. Take a camera and follow that celebrity around in their everyday life. People are fascinated by what the stars do off the screen. We like to see how they live, what kind of pets they have, what they eat for breakfast, how they interact with their families, splashing in their pools, driving their cars, and on and on to fill our curiosity. Then the audience feels that they know that popular person so much better than before, better than the magazines or the celebrity-watch columns. It’s a reality show revealing the truth of how a person really is.
Did you know that you are in a reality show as a Christian? The Bible says we are epistles of Christ and the world is studying us to see what it really means to follow Christ. We’ve been telling people about the Lord but now they are watching us to see if we are the real deal. They’ve got us on video and are seeing if our walk is matching our talk. They are reading us like a book. And if you think about it, we might be the only Bible they have ever read.
The Bible says, “Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season . . .” (2 Tim 4:2). This means that there are no breaks or time-outs to being a Christian. We can show it or blow it but may we always seek to be a great advertisement for following Jesus to others. (Everybody loathes a bad commercial!).
This morning a person cut me off with a Christian bumper-sticker on the back of his car. Then I watched him do the same thing to someone else ahead of me. Not good. I prayed for him to be a good witness for Christ even on the freeway. Then I thought about my own life and prayed for myself. I want the non-believer to read my life and then want a personal copy for himself!
People are watching. Let’s give them a reality show of the highest ratings so they will know Jesus is real and that there is life beyond what they see on TV!
