I hate spider webs! They give me the creeps. When I unintentionally walk through one I do the “wild-man dance” as I quickly untangle myself from the nightmarish stickiness. Funny to think about, but did you know there is a web to watch out for at all times? It’s dangerous and can destroy you or someone you love. It might even be in your own house. Your guessed it . . . it’s the worldwide web.
Now don’t get me wrong, I like to surf the web. It can be educational, helpful, and convenient but it can also be dangerous. It can be a web of temptation any Christian can fall into. It can entangle the male in the family with alluring and forbidding images. It can entangle the teenager in a chat room. I’ve even seen it entangle women in their curious sensitivities.
Samson can tell you the problems he had with the “web”. Delilah said to Samson, "Until now you have mocked me and told me lies. Tell me what you may be bound with." And he said to her, "If you weave the seven locks of my head into the WEB of the loom" (Judg 16:13) Play on words, I know, but you get the picture.
Cyberspace can also be a shallow substitute for a personal, one-on-one relationship with another person. Listen to what the apostle John said to his friend, “Having many things to write to you, I did not wish to do so with paper and ink; but I hope to come to you and speak face to face, that our joy may be full.” (2 John 1:12) “Face to face” . . . that’s what we need more of in our impersonal high-tech world.
So yeah, I’ve got a few concerns about the WWW. It’s the shepherd instinct the Lord has given me for the flock I care about. Bottom line, just remember this . . . don’t let the dot.com become the dot.bomb. Satan doesn’t take a vacation when you’re online. Character is what you are in private. Let’s be like David who declared:
“I will behave wisely in a perfect way. Oh, when will You come to me? I will walk within my house with a perfect heart. 3 I will set nothing wicked before my eyes; I hate the work of those who fall away; It shall not cling to me.” (Psa 101:2-3).
And like Paul who said “ . . . whatever you do, do all to the glory of God!” (1 Cor 10:31)
