SPIRITUAL IGNORANCE

(Hosea 4:6) My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. . . .

Israel came to a point as a nation where they stopped reading or listening to the Word of God. They walked away from an adherence to the Law of God and even rejected the prophets that God raised up to speak the Word of the Lord. As a result of their spiritual ignorance, they started worshiping idols. Eventually the nation crumbled because of their corruption and God brought judgment upon them for their lack of repentance.

The Sadducees were also ignorant of the truth of God in their lives. Because of their lack of Bible knowledge they came up with all kinds of weird and unscriptural beliefs. In fact, when Jesus encountered this group He challenged them by saying, "You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God” (Mat 22:29). They not only opposed Jesus but later on opposed the apostles in their proclamation of the truth of God (Acts 5).

What about us? Are we biblically illiterate and spiritually ignorant? Do we know more about what’s on TV than what’s in the Bible? Can we answer more “Millionaire” or “Jeopardy” questions than questions about the Word of God? Do we know more about a player’s batting average or what a star wore to the award ceremony than we do the Scriptures? God help us if we do! And may the Lord spare us from spiritual ignorance!! It will render us not only ignorant but impotent in our walk with Jesus. There is no other way to grow (2 Pet 3:18) or be strong (1 John 2:13) or to wage warfare (Mat 4:1-11) against the inveterate foe of our souls, than by knowing, studying, and applying the Word of God to our lives.

May the Lord give us a hunger and a thirst for His Word so we can be wise and discerning in these last days, making choices that are based on God’s truth that will endure forever.

(Isa 40:8) The grass withers, the flower fades, But the word of our God stands forever."
