RIGHTEOUSNESS OR RAGE

(Eph 4:26) "Be angry, and do not sin": do not let the sun go down on your wrath.

Do you ever get angry? What a question! There is so much to get angry about. We usually get angry when someone violates our personal rights, affronts our dignity, or serves an injustice to our person or property. But isn’t it interesting how the apostle Paul says it’s okay to be angry, just don’t sin with that anger? Anger can be a normal and proper human emotion if displayed in the right context. But anger is like a tiger that needs to be tamed. You hear of how circus tigers can be as gentle as a house cat but may so easily turn on a single capricious whim. Anger is like that. It is such a powerful emotion that must be kept in check or it will turn to rage and spark a forest fire of destruction. Thank God for the fruit of the Spirit (Gal 5:22-23) which gives us the ability to have self-control in all situations, even those where we are the must rudely and blatantly provoked.

“Thank-you Lord for the power we have in Jesus to be fully human with our emotions and yet be able to bring all of our passions under the control of the Holy Spirit!”

Instead of being angry and sinning, let’s practice getting angry at sin! Then we will be placing all of our energies in the right place, loving God and hating evil (Psa 97:10).
