(2 Cor 5:17) Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
As you look back in your life, is there something that you regret? Is there something you feel bad about, something you wish you could change? We all do things that we are sorry about. We were caught up in the moment. Emotions were strong and we were weak and succumbed. We look back and feel ashamed. We wish we could press the rewind button or go back in a time machine and change what happened. Then we could live with ourselves and be freed from the guilt and that nagging and tenacious sense of shame.
But can we go back? No, of course not. But God can! Not only back to the source of regret but back even further to the cross where His Son died so that His blood could wipe away our sins and our shame. Things happen, but what Jesus did on the cross is the greater happening that can bring cleansing, forgiveness, and a brand-new start.
You can’t change what’s in the past, but you don’t have to let the past be your taskmaster. Take your regrets to the cross and let them be crucified there with the God who loves you. Then begin again, fresh and ready for the new challenges that await you this year . . . and the rest of your life.
And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God. (1 Cor 6:11)
