THE SECOND MILE

(Mat 5:41) "And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two.

The Romans could command any Jew in Israel to carry their army sack one mile. The Jews would despise this law of theirs and do it spitefully. They couldn’t wait to lay that detested load down and walk away from this loathsome soldier. Then Jesus comes along and says to not only go one mile but two!

Christians are unique people. They are unique because they follow a God who is a God of mercy and love. God’s ways are not our ways (Isa 55:8) and the Lord teaches His disciples to be like Him in thought, word, and deed (Luke 6:40).

Do you seek to do your duty out of obligation and compulsion or do you serve the Lord with gladness and graciousness when called upon to serve in an unappealing way? Could you imagine what a Roman soldier would be thinking when the Christian would go two miles with his sack? What a witness to the Master Teacher!

May the Lord help us to shine as the unique and special people He says we are and in so doing proclaim the praises of Him who called us out of darkness into His marvelous light (1 Pet 2:9).
