ARE YOU SKEPTICAL?
Jesus said to him, "Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed." (John 20:29)
There are some people who are skeptical about everything. They doubt this and they are uncertain about that. They just have a hard time trusting and launching out into the sea of belief. They have a deep need to make sure about everything before they try it. And when they try it they aren’t quite sure it is real or the best thing for them.
Thomas was like that. He just couldn’t believe what the other apostles were saying. They said the resurrected Christ appeared to them as they were all in a room. Problem was, Thomas wasn’t there that evening. He heard the testimony of 10 of his fellow apostles but he declared emphatically that he wouldn’t believe unless he saw Jesus himself. And then he would have to observe the wounds in the Lord’s hands and furthermore would have to verify this material witness by touching the wound prints in His hands and side. Now there’s a skeptic for you.
The Lord loves the skeptic. A week later the apostles were all in a room again and this time Thomas was present. Guess who came for a visit? It was Jesus. And Jesus walked right up to that doubter and said, "Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing." I don’t think Thomas ever doubted the Lord again.
How about you? Having a hard time trusting? Is your skepticism turning into cynicism? It usually does. But I’ve never known a happy cynic, have you? Always testing and therefore always testy? Perhaps people are like this because they’ve been let down before. But the Lord will never let you down. He is fully trustworthy and so is His Word. He loves you and wants you to believe Him for all the good things He wants to accomplish in your life. Launch out into the sea of faith. You won’t drown. In fact, the Lord will keep you afloat and take you on a faith odyssey that will blow your mind as well as your reason. Ready to go? Let’s do it!
